The Tribe

"The Tribe" is a 2014 Ukrainian drama film directed by Miroslav Slaboshpitsky, that tells a story of a deaf-mute boy, Sergey (played by Hryhoriy Fesenko), who enters a boarding school for deaf students, where he finds himself in a hierarchy of criminal activity, ruled by King (played by Oleksandr Osadchyi), and struggles to find his place within the group. The film follows Sergey's journey as he navigates through acts of violence, robbery, sex and prostitution, and eventually falls in love with one of the girls, Anya (played by Yana Novikova), who is also involved in the criminal activities. The film explores themes of power, control, silence, and the consequences of breaking unwritten rules within a community. The film is unique in its use of sign language as its primary language, without any spoken dialogue or subtitles, which adds to its raw and unsettling atmosphere.
