With this claustrophobic thriller drawn from real events, Alfred Hitchcock delivered an unusually naturalistic take on his trademark themes, shooting on location in New York with documentary realism. When an eyewitness to a robbery identifies musician Christopher Balestrero (Henry Fonda) as the culprit, Balestrero cannot prove where he was on the day of the crime. Now, the wheels of justice—driven by the testimony of witnesses—mercilessly grind away at the life of a man who looks remarkably like the real thief, driving him and his wife (Vera Miles) to desperation.
