Set in 1800s Italy and based on a true story, “Kidnapped” is so primally upsetting that you would think it would be unbearable to watch.

With stately restraint, Bellocchio manages to put the audience in an ever-tightening chokehold of tension and outrage.

This is a feast for the eyes, but it's the effect on your heart that stays with you long after the film is through.
