Newcomer Al Rafeea is superb as Zain; Yordanos Shiferaw is sympathetic as an undocumented immigrant who befriends him.
Co-writer (and well-known Lebanese actress) Nadine Labaki's direction is extremely effective.

Rafeea, a non-professional actor and Syrian refugee, is the film’s secret weapon (...) his strange, fascinating, eerily adult face offers a litany of minute expressions.

Det är imponerande att komma så nära och berätta en så pass uttänkt historia med bara amatörer, med ett spädbarn i en av huvudrollerna och en tolvårig gatpojke som inte kunde skriva sitt eget namn i den andra.

Kapernaum' er ikke kun en rystende 'dokumentarisk' film – men først og fremmest en menneskelig fortælling, hudløs ægte og nærværende i hvert smerteligt nærbillede af svigt, savn og vanrøgt.
