This is not an easy film to watch; there are times when you can be forgiven for wanting to look away from the carnage. The effort is worth the reward, as Rita and George will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.

The film is not just a glossy period piece; it’s an emotional story about human resilience, one that’s sadly still too familiar almost a century later. 

...gives us a sobering taste of that fright with citizens flooding the gates of tube stations, hiding by the underground rails until the strikes come to a temporary halt each day.

It's a film of moments, some of which are really wonderful and beautifully shot.

At a time when so-called colour blind period dramas are seen as a ‘win’, it feels all the more relieving to watch a film that tries its hand at honesty.
