In the summer of 1991, a rickety Albanian ship, the Vlora, reached the port of Bari, Italy, carrying a staggering 20,000 people. The ship had been on its way back from Cuba, loaded with 10,000 tons of sugar. As the crew worked to unload the cargo, an unstoppable wave of desperate Albanians stormed the ship, forcing the captain to set a new course for Italy. The scene that awaited them was one of shock and disbelief: an empty football stadium where the migrants were held before being sent back home. But this was just the beginning of a long and arduous journey for those seeking a better life in Europe. Twenty-one years later, over 4.5 million foreigners now call Italy home.
