The Duel

The Duel is a 2016 Western film directed by Kieran Darcy-Smith and written by Matt Cook. The movie takes place in Texas in 1887 and follows the story of David Kingston, a Texas Ranger who is sent to the town of Mount Hermon to investigate a series of murders and disappearances of Mexican citizens. Kingston is tasked with finding Maria Calderon, the missing niece of a Mexican general who is threatening to invade the town to find her. Upon his arrival, Kingston discovers that the town is under the control of Abraham Brant, a charismatic preacher and mayor who has a strange hold on the townsfolk. Brant is revealed to be the man who killed Kingston's father in a knife fight 20 years earlier, and Kingston must navigate his conflicting loyalties to the law and his desire for revenge. As Kingston investigates the town and the nearby Rio Grande, he uncovers a dark secret: Brant has been abducting Mexicans to serve as prey for rich foreigners to hunt. When Kingston confronts Brant and the townspeople, he is challenged to a knife fight by Brant's son Isaac, which he barely survives. He then frees a number of captured Mexicans, including Maria Calderon, and kills Brant in a shootout. The movie ends with Kingston riding off into the brush alone, leaving behind the town and its dark secrets. The Duel stars Liam Hemsworth as David Kingston, Woody Harrelson as Abraham Brant, and Emily Watson as Marisol, Kingston's wife. The film received mixed reviews from critics but has been praised for its atmospheric tension and strong performances.
