What is Song about? Toggle content

Song is a heartwarming documentary that explores the ancient tradition of Finnish rune singing and its impact on the lives of two people: a 90-year-old rune singer, Jussi Huovinen, and his 35-year-old pupil, Hanneriina Moisseinen. The film follows their journey over two and a half years, capturing the moments when Hanneriina learns Jussi's songs and the ancient wisdom they hold. Through their stories, we witness the comforting power of singing and how it brings people together across generations. The film features beautiful performances of traditional Finnish rune songs, as well as Hanneriina and her friend Sólveig singing and playing the Icelandic kiviharpur. Extras include never-before-seen footage of Jussi's pirt (a traditional Finnish cabin) concert, where Pauli Hanhiniemi and his friends sing "Suolammen vettä" and "Kuuliaisväki." DVD extras also include information about rune singing and the lyrics to the songs in both Finnish and English.
