In 1942 Boston, a young boy named Timmy kills his mother with an axe after she orders him to dispose of a nude jigsaw puzzle. Forty years later, a series of brutal murders take place at a local university, where female students are killed and mutilated with a chainsaw. The killer, who appears to be a black-clad figure, steals body parts from his victims and creates a human puzzle with them. The police, led by Lt. Bracken and Sgt. Holden, investigate the murders and suspect a reserved professor of anatomy named Arthur Brown. However, they soon discover that the true killer is the dean of the university, who is revealed to be Timmy Reston from the beginning of the film. He is killed by Bracken while attempting to saw off Mary Riggs' feet, and the jigsaw puzzle made of his victims' body parts is discovered. The film ends with a shocking twist as the jigsaw corpse inexplicably comes to life and crushes Kendall's genitalia.
