In the final months of World War II, the Nazi regime embarked on a brutal campaign of forced marches, transferring thousands of prisoners from concentration camps in Eastern territories to avoid the advancing Soviet Red Army. The prisoners, many of whom were already weak and emaciated from months of suffering, were forced to travel enormous distances on foot, often with little food, water, or shelter. Thousands perished along the way, victims of hunger, thirst, exhaustion, and murder at the hands of their Nazi captors.
