Marty Piletti, a socially awkward butcher living in The Bronx with his mother, has given up on finding love. After being pressured by his family and friends to settle down, Marty meets Clara, a plain high school science teacher, at a dance hall.Sparks fly between them as they spend the evening together, but their relationship is threatened by Marty's friends and mother, who disapprove of Clara's plainness. and they try to convince him to remain unmarried and with them. Eventually, Marty realizes that he's found someone who makes him happy and breaks free from his friends' hold to pursue Clara. The film ends with Marty anxiously calling Clara, hoping to start a new life together despite the objections of those around him.
