In a future where time travel is possible, the mafia uses it to send their enemies back in time to be executed by an assassin known as a "looper." Joe is one of these loopers, living a comfortable life and making a good living. However, things take a turn when his next target turns out to be his future self, with his face uncovered and hands unbound. Old Joe escapes, and Young Joe is forced to go on the run, pursued by the Gat Men, who are determined to close the loop. Along the way, he meets Sara and her son Cid at a farmhouse where he discovers that Cid may be the Rainmaker - the person who will overthrow the five major bosses and close all loops - when he grows up. In order to change his own future and save his wife from being killed in seven years' time after he closes the loop Old Joe plans to kill all three children born at that hospital on that same day not knowing which one will become Rainmaker.
