In 1840, a strong-willed Inuit grandmother, Ningiuq, and her grandson, Maniq, embark on a journey to an isolated island to prepare for the long winter ahead. As they wait for the return of the hunters, Ningiuq's friend and Maniq's great-aunt, Kuutujuk, passes away. Ningiuq and Maniq bury her and face the harsh reality of their own mortality. When they return to the main camp, they find that everyone has died mysteriously, with signs of pain and blisters on their bodies. With Ningiuq's wisdom and survival skills, she and Maniq must fight for their lives as they face the unknown threat that could wipe out their entire community.
