What’s most exciting about Lamb, the first Ethiopian film to play at Cannes (it appears in the Un Certain Regard section), is that it is an ethnographic film made entirely from the inside out.

Both of these people are lost, each in their own way... ...And the actors playing them make their situation feel so plausibly real that at times the movie—and the audience—aches with them.

Lamb tells the story of a young Ethiopian boy named Ephraim who embarks on a journey to save his beloved lamb, Chuni, from being sacrificed for a religious feast. Ephraim's father has left him with distant relatives, where he struggles to adjust and finds comfort in his friendship with Chuni. When his uncle demands that he sacrifice Chuni, Ephraim decides to take matters into his own hands and sets out to earn money to buy a ticket back home and save his lamb.
