What is Kidnapped about?
"Kidnapped" is a historical drama film set in 1858 Bologna, Italy. The movie tells the true story of Edgardo Mortara, a young Jewish boy who was forcibly taken from his family by the Papal States and raised as a Catholic. The film follows Edgardo's journey as he grows up in a completely Catholic environment, while his parents and siblings struggle to free him. The movie takes place during a time of political crisis for the papacy, with Pope Pius IX facing criticism and opposition from European intellectuals. Despite this, the Pope takes a personal interest in Edgardo's education and has him publicly baptized again to dispel any doubts about his belonging to the Catholic Church. As Edgardo grows up, he studies for the priesthood and assumes the clerical name of Pio Maria. However, when the Papal States are annexed by the Kingdom of Italy, Edgardo is faced with a difficult decision: to return home or stay with the Catholic Church. He ultimately chooses to remain with the Church, even attempting to baptize his dying mother against her will. The film explores themes of family, faith, identity, and power, raising questions about the limits of religious authority and individual freedom. With a strong cast and historical context, "Kidnapped" promises to be a thought-provoking drama that sheds light on an important chapter in European history.
