...a striking work of storytelling. By assembling the scattered images and historical clips suggested by Baldwin’s writing, I Am Not Your Negro is a cinematic séance, and one of the best movies about the civil rights era ever made.

...operates on many levels at once: It’s not only a fresh vessel for Baldwin’s own analysis of black life in America, but a platform for his assessment of other great thinkers who informed his views.

Frequently asked questions

What is I Am Not Your Negro about? Toggle content

I Am Not Your Negro is a powerful and thought-provoking documentary that explores the complexities of race and identity in America. Through the eyes of writer James Baldwin, the film delves into the history of the Civil Rights movement and the lives of three influential leaders - Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. - who were tragically cut down by assassins' bullets. The film is structured into five chapters, each one digging deeper into the soul of America and its fraught relationship with its black population. With Baldwin's poignant words as our guide, we journey through the past and present, witnessing firsthand the struggle for justice and equality that has defined generations of African Americans. I Am Not Your Negro is not just a historical account; it is a searing indictment of systemic racism and a call to action for change. The film challenges viewers to confront their own biases and assumptions, to question why they need a "nigger" in their lives, and to demand better from their country. As Baldwin so eloquently puts it: "The future of the Negro in this country is precisely as bright or as dark as the future of this country." The choice is ours.
