In 1950s Moscow, a group of young friends rebel against Soviet authority by embracing jazz music and a free-spirited lifestyle. Mels, a former Komsomol member, falls in love with Polly, a stilyaga girl, and must choose between his loyalty to the party and his desire to be with her. As the stilyagi movement grows, Mels becomes a leader and performs jazz music, but the group faces challenges from the authorities and internal conflicts. Despite the obstacles, Mels and Polly's love endures and they start a family, but the film ends with Mels reflecting on the fragility of their way of life and the importance of remembering their legacy.
