Hagazussa – A Heathen's Curse

In the film Hagazussa, set in 15th century Austria, Albrun, an orphan who has grown up in isolation taking care of goats lives with her daughter in a remote cottage.She encounters hostility and superstition from the village community, who believe she is a witch like her mother. After her mother's death, she finds a mysterious presence in the woods. A traveler tells them to leave, fearing Perchta, a creature from Germanic folklore. One night men dressed in goat skins assault them. Her mother dies,and Albrun finds her lifeless body full of snakes in the woods. Fifteen years later, Albrun still lives in the cottage, and is a new mother. She is shunned by the townspeople and harassed by boys. A kind townswoman named Swinda treats her kindly and takes her to see the local priest. The priest gives her mother's polished skull , painted with flowers and greenery, telling her that isolation leads to temptation and sacrilege must be cleansed. Albrun hears voices in the woods and her daughter refuses to breastfeed .Swinda takes her on a walk and warns about people who don't carry God their hearts. On the way down Swinda whispers something to man who then rapes Albrun. After this traumatic event, Albrun brings a dead rat to poison the local water source, then urinates and menstruates into it. She communion with mothers skull , and hallucinates. In the final act, Fire, Albrun's mental state declines further as she becomes more isolated and paranoid believing that witches are after her daughter. She holds her child and sees many dead bodies in town. On her way home, eats mushrooms that cause hallucinations. She returns home later to find her goats have been stolen except for one that has been butchered and mutilated. Enraged by her mistreatment , she poisons the water source and then becomes delusional , seeing visions of her mother advising advancing witchcraft. Alone in the woods,Albrun's mental state deteriorates further. In the final scene she burns down her cottage with her daughter inside.
