In a rural town in Northern Ireland, a group of soldiers are confronted with the consequences of their carelessness when they accidentally hit a woman and her son with their vehicle. Two years later, they encounter a horse trapped in a river and try to rescue it, but the animal's owner is hostile towards them. Despite his initial resistance, they are able to save the horse, but the tension between the soldiers and the owner's family lingers. As they seek shelter in the owner's home, simmering resentments and past traumas come to a head, revealing the deep-seated divisions that exist within this country.
