Elephant follows the lives of several high school students as they go about their daily routines, unaware of the impending doom that is about to strike. Two students, Alex and Eric, are planning to carry out a mass shooting at their school, motivated by unclear reasons, ranging from bullying and neglect to violent video games and Nazism. They plant propane bombs in the cafeteria, hoping to blow it up and shoot people as they try to escape the fire. When the bombs fail, they decide to start shooting indiscriminately. The film takes a candid camera approach, following the students as they go about their day, capturing their mundane conversations and interactions. The audience is left with a sense of unease as they witness the ordinary events leading up to the massacre. The film's focus on character development and subtle hints at the impending tragedy creates a chilling atmosphere that culminates in a devastating climax.
