...a scene as good as any I've seen this year. It lasts about 10 minutes, but it is the emotional heart and soul of Doubt, and if Viola Davis isn't nominated by the Academy, an injustice will have been done.

What is Doubt about? Toggle content

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Doubt is a gripping and thought-provoking drama that explores the complexities of human relationships, morality, and the power of suspicion. Set in a Catholic school in the 1960s, the film follows Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep), the rigid and fear-inspiring principal, who becomes convinced that Father Brendan Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is abusing one of the students, Donald Miller (Joseph Foster). As Sister Aloysius begins her investigation, she enlists the help of Sister James (Amy Adams), a naive and idealistic history teacher, and Mrs. Miller (Viola Davis), Donald's mother. As the story unfolds, the characters become embroiled in a web of accusations, suspicions, and denials that threaten to tear their lives apart. With a talented cast that includes Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis, all of whom received Oscar nominations for their performances, Doubt is a mesmerizing and suspenseful film that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
