What is Darwin's Nightmare about? Toggle content

In the 1960s, a scientific experiment gone wrong introduced the Nile perch, a voracious predator, into Lake Victoria, decimating native fish populations and causing an ecological disaster. The resulting fishing industry, fueled by globalization, exports the perch's white meat to the north, creating a prosperous business alliance between fishermen, politicians, Russian pilots, prostitutes, and European commissioners. As enormous cargo planes from the former Soviet Union fly overhead, a new commerce emerges: the trade of arms. The film, Darwin's Nightmare, directed by Hubert Sauper and prize-winner at numerous festivals including the European Film Awards (2004) and Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary (2006), sheds light on the devastating consequences of globalization and the widening gap between rich and poor.
