Journeyman action star Gerard Butler grimaces and groans through much of the surprisingly aloft Plane, a briskly paced thriller that agreeably exceeds low expectations.

The biggest scene-stealer, really, is Gun, a quite large rifle brought by some airline-hired American black ops dudes who later appear, and which can fire bullets that rocket through car doors and exploding rib cages.

Is Plane good? Well, keeping in mind that critics don’t pay to see movies, yeah, sure, Plane is good.

Tense, thrilling and reassuringly preposterous.
