In 2067, Japan seals itself off from the rest of the world due to international opposition against its advancements in robotic technology.s . Ten years later, the United States Navy special warfare unit "SWORD" suspects that Japan has concealed extensive development of banned technologies and embarks on an unapproved scheme to infiltrate Japan and gather intelligence. Vexille, the sole SWORD agent to evade capture, teams up with Maria, head of the resistance, to draw the Jags (giant whirling constructs of semisentient metal) to Daiwa's corporate headquarters. However, Kisaragi, the master of Daiwa has not used his own process on himself and plans to invade America. Vexille and Maria are captured, but Vexille pursues Kisaragi while Maria frees Leon. In the end, Vexille and Leon are rescued by a SWORD helicopter as Daiwa headquarters collapses into the bay, along with every Jag in Japan, leaving behind a lifeless wasteland.
