In 1991, as the Soviet Union collapses, a stranded Soviet cosmonaut named Sergei finds an unexpected friend in Sergio, a Cuban professor and radio enthusiast. Despite being on opposite sides of the Cold War, the two men form a bond through their shared passion for amateur radio. As they communicate via radio, they help each other navigate the turbulent changes happening in their countries. But their friendship is put to the test when Sergei's rescue becomes a matter of national pride for the new Russian president Boris Yeltsin. Will their friendship survive the political tensions between their nations?
