In "Rival," a young boy named Roman and his mother Oksana leave their home in Ukraine to start a new life in Germany. But as they navigate their way in a foreign land, Roman finds himself struggling for his mother's attention as she works illegally to make ends meet. Meanwhile, Gert, an elderly widower who takes them in, tries to befriend Roman but is met with resistance.
