Qissa

Qissa is a sweeping drama that explores the complexities of identity, family, and tradition in post-colonial India. Set against the backdrop of the Partition, the film follows the story of Umber Singh, a Sikh who is forced to flee his village and start anew. Determined to have a son to carry on his family lineage, Umber raises his youngest child, Kanwar, as a boy, despite her being a girl. As Kanwar grows up, she struggles with her identity and the expectations placed upon her by her father. When Umber arranges her marriage to Neeli, a girl of lower caste, the family is faced with the truth of their identities and the limitations of their desires. The film escalates into a struggle between individual ambition and societal norms, ultimately leading to a tragic confrontation that will change the course of their lives forever.
