Devils on the Doorstep

During the Japanese occupation of China, a peasant named Ma Dasan is forced to keep two prisoners, a belligerent Japanese sergeant and a nervous Chinese interpreter, in his home until the next New Year. The village leaders interrogate the prisoners, but Ma decides to keep them alive and hidden in a watchtower along the Great Wall. When the villagers discover Ma's secret, they hire an assassin to kill the prisoners. However, the assassin fails, and the prisoners are eventually returned to the Japanese Army encampment. The villagers are killed by the Japanese, and Ma seeks revenge by disguising himself and killing POWs. He is caught and executed by a Japanese soldier, but not before his head rolls nine times, blinks three times, and smiles - a sign of a painless death.
