In 1971, Erika Gerlach is struggling to balance her work in her husband's butchery, raising their three children, and her responsibilities in their small town. When she discovers she's pregnant again, she knows she can't handle another baby. Desperate for a solution, she secretly travels to her sister in Cologne to have an abortion. But when complications arise during the procedure, her husband finds out, leading to a bitter argument. Erika decides to leave her husband and move in with her children and sister. But in a time when women had limited rights, she faces an uphill battle to build a new life. Will she find a way to assert her independence and create a better future for herself and her children?
