Megalopolis - Arvostelut

I’m not yet convinced it works, but my goodness, am I thrilled it exists.

...if you meet it with any kind of goodwill, you may see in its unabashed rejection of nihilism, defiant unorthodoxy, and complete lack of artistic insecurity exactly the kind of challenge cinema needs right now.

This retro-futurist metropolis, a hybrid of Roman antiquity and art deco New York inspired by H.G. Wells and Fritz Lang, is rendered in chintzy digital vistas awash in dictatorial gold.

At 85, this could be Coppola’s final film, a swan song on a historic career. It is astonishing that he seems to have more drive than ever.

If this is to be Coppola’s last movie, he goes out as a true artist who pursued his vision – rather like Driver’s Cesar – to the very end.

...if Megalopolis, as many speculate, marks the end of Coppola’s career as a filmmaker, it flourishes in that finality, having held back or compromised nothing. It’s a film that operates without limits...

As utopias turn into dystopias over and over again throughout history, it’s the visionaries that will matter. The visionaries like Francis Ford Coppola.

...strains and even occasionally groans under the weight of all its trappings, but, oh my, I swear that in the midst of the chaos you can catch the flickering outlines of Coppola’s angels dancing. And it really is something to behold.
